PowerSHAPE-e Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who Is PowerSHAPE-e for?

PowerSHAPE-e is for anyone who wants to use a 3D CAD system to express their creativity, but cannot justify a full, commercial licence.

    • Designers and hobbyists can use PowerSHAPE-e to learn how a modern CAD modeller can help recreate their ideas in 3D quickly and accurately. PowerSHAPE-e gives you complete freedom to model any shape you can imagine.

    • Tool designers and estimators can use PowerSHAPE-e to ensure that quotes are right first time, every time. Powerful model inspection tools help you find any potential moulding issues early in the design process, reducing final tooling costs, and speeding up delivery.

    • Students can use PowerSHAPE-e to learn how a modern 3D CAD system works. Create complex 3D models quickly and simply, and share them with lecturers or other students. PowerSHAPE-e is perfect for design projects and engineering course work as it is easy to use, powerful, and flexible.

    • Existing CAD users can use PowerSHAPE-e to perform specialist jobs that their existing CAD system cannot do. If you ever struggle to create reliable solid models from poor quality data, PowerSHAPE-e provides the perfect low-cost solution. Fix any problems by using the Solid Doctor and then export a perfect Parasolid™ file to your existing CAD system for just £50 per model.

  • Will PowerSHAPE-e run on my computer?

PowerSHAPE-e will run on any computer that can run Microsoft Windows Professional from Vista onwards. We recommend the following:

    • Multi-core 64-bit processor.
    • 4GB RAM.
    • Windows 7 Professional (PowerSHAPE-e is not supported on 'Home' editions).
    • nVIDIA Quadro or Quadro FX, or AMD FirePro graphics card (see the full list of approved graphics cards here).

Delcam has been at the leading edge of High Speed Machining technologies for many years, helping customers to machine components in the shortest possible time.

  • What file formats can PowerSHAPE-e read?

PowerSHAPE-e uses Delcam Exchange (available separately from www.delcam-exchange.com) to read the following CAD formats:

    • Parasolid
    • ACIS
    • IGES & VDA
    • AutoCAD (DXF and DWG)
    • STEP
    • STL
    • CATIA V4 & 5
    • Cimatron
    • I-Deas
    • Pro-Engineer
    • Rhino
    • SolidEdge
    • SolidWorks
    • Unigraphics

  • What file formats can PowerSHAPE-e write?

When used with Delcam Exchange (available separately from www.delcam-exchange.com) PowerSHAPE-e can export to the following CAD formats:

    • Parasolid
    • ACIS
    • IGES & VDA
    • AutoCAD (DXF and DWG)
    • STEP
    • STL
    • CATIA V5
    • Rhino

Export requires an Exchange voucher, which costs £50 ($79 - €60) per model.

  • What are the limitations of PowerSHAPE-e?

PowerSHAPE-e is identical to the full, commercial version, except that:

    • rendering (to produce high-quality images) is unavailable.
    • 2D drawings cannot contain more than 30 annotation.(dimension or text) entities.

PowerSHAPE-e lets you create as many different designs and models as you want. Each model can contain as many curves, surfaces, solids or triangles as you need, and you can save as many times as you wish. You can even send models to other users of PowerSHAPE-e, allowing you to share your designs with others.

We release at least two new versions of PowerSHAPE-e each year. When a new version is ready, we will let you know, and you can simply update your installation. There is no need to re-register, as PowerSHAPE-e will remember your unique password from version to version.

We want our users to always be using the most up-to-date version available, so each version of PowerSHAPE-e has a life-span of one year from its release date. Provided you update your installation at least once a year, PowerSHAPE-e will never expire.

  • What's the catch?

PowerSHAPE-e models can be shared freely with other PowerSHAPE-e users. Models are stored in a special format that can only be read by Delcam Exchange. Export to any other format requires an Exchange voucher, which costs £50 ($79 - €60). One voucher is required per model, and models may be exported in as many different formats you need, as long as there is no change to the original model.

If you want to export several models, you can pre-pay for 'blocks' of vouchers at a discount.

For Schools, Colleges and Universities, special licences are also available. Contact us directly by emailing mark@delcam.com for full details.

We hope that you enjoy working with PowerSHAPE-e. If, for any reason, you decide that PowerSHAPE-e does not suit your needs, simply uninstall it from your computer. PowerSHAPE-e is free, and there is no need to take any further action.
